I first gave private piano lessons in 1990, and since then have been teaching a wide variety of topics to diverse groups of students, ranging from private oud and makam lessons (both individual and group) to audio engineering, from university lower-division survey classes to specialized graduate seminars and independent studies. I have taught in the U.S. as well as in Turkey.

current: fall 2011 (Cornell University)

 Visualizing Sound (Music 4307/7307, SHUM4307).
An advanced introduction to the concepts and techniques of sound and music transcription and analysis, particularly as they have developed within ethnomusicology and popular music studies. Among the many forms of sound visualization that may be covered: tablature notations, ethnomusicological and jazz descriptive transcriptions, postwar composition and extensions to the 5-line staff, computer-aided spectral and loudness analysis, digital audio workstation visual interfaces, synesthesias in visual art and architecture, and film sound and film music. Undergraduate/ graduate seminar.
 Music and Human Life (Music 2303).
An introduction to the sociology of music. The course contains three foci: analyzing ethnographic films and monographs, understanding the development of mass-mediated culture industries and internet-mediated musical practices, and doing a multimode ethnography research project involving online and offline participant observation of a music community in the Ithaca area. Undergraduate course.

 Music in and on the Internet (Music 1xxx).
The course covers the development of online fan communities (from newsgroups to facebook fan pages), internet-enabled music collaborations (from CAPE to ccmixtr), online distribution platforms (from mp3.com to Spotify), blogs and other emergent journalism forms, and changes to the idea of copyright prompted by the spread of file-sharing.  Music, Technology and Society (Cornell Music 4303/7303 SHUM 4303 , UMD MUET679).
A general framework for students of all music disciplines to study music technology in different socio-historical contexts. Topics include acoustics, technologies of the voice, piano manufacturing, electronic instruments, audio engineering (classical, rock and non-Western popular musics), and internet-connected “virtual” musical collaborations. Undergraduate/ graduate seminar.
 Music of Egypt and Turkey (Cornell Music 4305/7305 , UMD MUET438).
A seminar on contemporary music cultures, with units on music fundamentals (melody, meter and musical form), popular music genres and their relation to folkloric/ traditional arts, recording industries and mass media industries centered in Cairo and Istanbul, and folklore, nationalism and the politics of language, religion and ethnicity. Undergraduate/ graduate seminar.

 Impact of Music on Life (MUET210).
An introduction to the study of music in cross-cultural perspective, through an exploration of three themes: the perception and cognition of music; the construction and contestation of nationalism, race, ethnicity and folklore; and the effect of paradigm shifts in musical and non-musical technologies on music, musical instruments, and society. Undergraduate CORE class.
 Anthropology of Music (MUET650).
Survey of the contemporary anthropological theories and practices that have been central to the development of ethnomusicology and the anthropological study of music. Also, an analysis of cross-disciplinary research into the "anthropology of the senses" and its applicability to music-focused study. Graduate seminar.
 Field Methods in Ethnomusicology I (MUET660).
Practical training for fieldworkers in ethnographic research methods and techniques. Includes units on interviews, audio and photographic capture, fieldnotes, research ethics, IRB applications, and digital assets management. Graduate course.
 Field Methods II: Ethnographic Filmmaking (MUET661/ ANTH688D).
Advanced field research techniques for ethnomusicology and anthropology, including ethnographic filmmaking, multitrack audio recording and editing, and webpage design. Graduate course.
