eliot bates: Anatolian music, oud, audio engineering, and electronic music cultures

 
I first gave private piano lessons in 1990, and since then have been teaching a wide variety of topics to diverse groups of students, ranging from private oud and makam lessons (both individual and group) to audio engineering, from university lower-division survey classes to specialized graduate seminars and independent studies. I have taught in the U.S. as well as in Turkey.

A seminar on contemporary music cultures, with units on music fundamentals (melody, meter, and musical form), popular music genres and their relation to folkloric/ traditional arts, recording industries and mass media industries centered in Cairo and Istanbul, and folklore, nationalism and the politics of language, religion and ethnicity. Undergraduate/ graduate seminar.

A general framework for students of all music disciplines to study music technology in different socio-historical contexts. Topics include acoustics, technologies of the voice, piano manufacturing, electronic instruments, audio engineering (classical, rock and non-Western popular musics), and internet-connected "virtual" musical collaborations. Graduate seminar.
